As Viacom 18’s KAHAANI nears its release, director Sujoy Ghosh couldn’t be more excited and credits a huge portion of the film to lead protagonist Vidya Balan, stating that the film is more ‘her baby’ than his own.
The suspense thriller KAHAANI tells the tale of a seven month pregnant Vidya Bagchi in search of her missing husband alone in a festive city, with nothing to rely on except fragments from her memories about him and when it comes to casting a woman of substance, the director could look no further than Vidya Balan.
Says Sujoy Ghosh, ”The story demanded a pregnant woman in the central role. We wanted a well known face since it is the demand of the film and we got it in Vidya. She is a delight of an actress because you just can’t find any flaws in her acting.”
Not holding back on praise towards his lead actress he adds ”KAHAANI is more of Vidya’s baby than mine today. She had a certain belief in the film and today she is proud of it. She was not just an actor on the film; she was much more than that. She knew everything about what was happening on the production front. At times she even managed crowds when things became a little unruly while shooting.”
If that wasn’t all, the film’s script-writer Advaita Kala too says she developed the character keeping Vidya in mind and always knew that the actress would do justice to the roll. Says Advaita, ”I thought of Vidya as the ‘hero’ of my film even before THE DIRTY PICTURE was released. I believe in telling stories about strong women.”
Ask director Sujoy Ghosh whether he is a bundle of nerves in the release week and he is quick to reply ”There is no set formula that tells you whether a film will work or not. I wanted to work with Vidya and I have achieved that.”
