HC to Censors: Clear stand on ‘Dirty Picture’

HYDERABAD: Justice Vilas V Afzalpurkar of the AP High Court on Wednesday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to state within a week its stand on a petition wishing that the board stall the release of ‘Dirty Picture’ – said to be a biopic on south Indian actress Silk Smitha – on the grounds that the contents of the film were obscene and far from true.

Silk Smitha, the actress who became popular for playing sleazy roles, allegedly committed suicide a few years ago. Bollywood actress Vidya Balan plays the role of Silk Smitha in the film produced by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms and Sobha Kapoor. The film has been directed by Milan Luthria.

All of them were served notices by the court. The petitioner, Vadlapatla Naga Vara Prasad, said he is the brother of the deceased actress and charged the filmmakers with filling the film with unrealistic and obscene scenes rather than trying to portray the true picture. He said that none of the filmmakers had talked to him. Prasad contented that her private life was different and that she had even supported a school financially in her native place, Kovvali in West Godavari district, he said.

Although the petitioner claimed that he had served a notice on the censor board asking it to not certify the film at all, B Mayur Reddy, counsel for the censor board, told the court that they had not received any such notice. The judge, while asking the petitioner to serve a copy to the counsel, directed censor board to clear its stand within a week and deferred the case to coming Wednesday.
